En Face marks the third collaboration between poet Charles North and painter Trevor Winkfield. It is comprised of eight of North’s poems and six of Winkfield’s color images. “Rather than illustrate Charles’s poems,” Winkfield has said, “I wanted my images to act as their accompaniment, my hope being not to overwhelm the words, but literally to stand beside them, en face, as poems and their translations often do.”

Trevor Winkfield was born in Leeds, England, and moved to New York City in 1969. Winkfield has been deeply involved through life long friendships and projects including book cover designs, poetry journals and collaborative projects with poets from the New York School, including John Ashbery and Ron Padgett. His work is in the collections of the Berkeley Art Museum, CA, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He has been the recipient of awards from Guggenheim Fellowship, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 2022 he was made a Chevalier in l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government.
Charles North is an American poet, essayist and teacher. Described by the poet James Schuyler as “the most stimulating poet of his generation,” he has received two National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowships, a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists award (2008), four Fund for Poetry awards, and a Poets Foundation award. His New & Selected “What It is Like” headed NPR’s Best Poetry Books of the Year (2011), and his most recent collection, “Everything and Other Poems”, was named a N.Y. Times New and Noteworthy Book.”
