MORTAL
September 7th - December 9th, 2023
I am a storyteller - A narrative painter.
“My figures, mostly women, are often meditations on archetypes, myth, or personal experience. This allows me to build an environment inhabited by beings with all that it means to be human, alive, and still in a dream.”
“Mortal”
I chose this name for these long pieces as they are an expression, a meditation, on life and death.
Even as a child, I was obsessed with that pairing - why live if only to die? Now as an adult, I am amazed, overwhelmed and in awe of this gift of life, even for the few moments we have.
In most paintings, you accept them as a whole, see them in their entirety. (Of course, you may find hidden and complex things as you continue to live with them.) But the long pieces must be “walked,” and as such they exist in time and space in a different way. It takes time to read them and they are read in a linear way, in time.
They evolved slowly with no preconceived outcome. I moved forward and back over and over til the story was told. The figures, even when goddesses, are touched by mortality.
